We're Back: Eli's Table Reopens at 129 Meeting Street

Eli's Table has reopened at 129 Meeting Street, right in the middle of Charleston's historic district, and the dining room looks the way we always hoped it would. Softer light. Warmer wood. Tables spaced so a conversation stays yours.

The renovation took time, and we used it. Our kitchen rebuilt the menu course by course, keeping the Lowcountry dishes people drive across the bridge for and adding a few things we've wanted to cook for years. Our neighbor Toast! on Meeting, at 127 Meeting St, handles breakfast and brunch, and Eli's Table takes the evening.

If you've been waiting to come back, this is your sign. Downtown Charleston fine dining still has room at the table.

What's new inside the dining room

The bones of the space are historic and we left them alone. Brick, tall windows, the kind of walls that hold a hundred years of dinners. What we changed is everything that touches your evening: lighting that flatters instead of glares, banquettes you can actually settle into, and a floor plan that gives two people at a corner table some privacy.

Acoustics got real attention too. You shouldn't have to lean in and repeat yourself on an anniversary. The room is lively without being loud, which is a harder balance than it sounds.

What changed on the menu

Our cooking is still elevated Southern and Lowcountry at heart, with bold flavors from further afield where they earn their place. Shrimp and grits stayed, because it should. Our version starts with Carolina stone-ground grits cooked slow and local shrimp that never sit long. Beignets and crème brûlée stayed too, and the pastry side of the kitchen has gotten sharper.

Beyond that, the menu moves with the season and with what our purveyors bring us. That's the honest answer, and it's the reason a dish you loved in October may look different in April. You can always see what we're cooking right now on the current menu.

We also kept our chef-crafted three-course dinner, which is the easiest way to eat through the menu in one sitting. If you want a sense of how that evening unfolds, we walked through it in how to make a night of the three-course dinner.

The first few weeks back have been busy, and weekends fill early.

Why 129 Meeting Street still matters

You can walk to us from the Market, from King Street shopping, from most of the historic hotels downtown. That location has always been part of the appeal. Guests park once, stroll a few blocks, and let dinner be the anchor of the night rather than another errand.

It also means we host a lot of firsts. First anniversary dinners. First nights of a honeymoon. First time somebody's parents see the city. We take that seriously, and our team is trained to notice the occasion without making a production of it (unless you want the production, in which case just tell us).

Our neighbor: Toast! on Meeting

Toast! on Meeting is right next door at 127 Meeting St, serving breakfast and brunch, and Eli's Table at 129 Meeting St takes the evening. Two neighbors, two very different moods. It's a genuinely nice thing for guests staying nearby: coffee and a full breakfast in the morning next door, then a proper dinner with us after the sun goes down.

How to plan your first visit back

Book ahead if you can, especially Friday and Saturday. Weeknights are calmer and often the better call for a long, unhurried dinner. If you're bringing a group or celebrating something, mention it when you book so we can seat you somewhere that suits the night.

  • Dress is polished but comfortable. Most guests land somewhere around smart casual.
  • Tell us about allergies or dietary needs when you reserve. Our team is glad to accommodate most requests with a little notice.
  • Celebrating? A note in your reservation goes straight to the floor team.
  • Larger parties and buyouts are easier to arrange with a few weeks of lead time.

For a birthday, engagement, or milestone dinner, our private dining and celebrations guide covers what to think about before you call.

Come see the room

Reopening a restaurant is strange and wonderful. You spend months looking at plans and samples, and then one evening the room fills with people and it finally makes sense. That's the part we missed. Come join us at the table and see the new space for yourself.

We'd love to have you back at 129 Meeting Street.
